Fifty migrants pass away after boat goes down in central Mediterranean

(MENAFN) Approximately 50 migrants are believed to have lost their lives after a boat sank in the central Mediterranean, according to late reports based on testimony from a survivor.

Military officials in Malta indicated that a single man was pulled from the sea on Friday by a commercial cargo ship operating off the coast of Tunisia. He was later transported to Malta, where he received medical care. Based on his account, the vessel had been carrying dozens of people who did not survive the ordeal.

A migrant support organization also confirmed the incident, stating: "Authorities confirm that one survivor was rescued to Malta. According to him, 50 people did not survive. The people started from Tunisia and spent 24 hours in the water,"

The organization noted that the group had departed from Tunisia and remained adrift in the sea for an extended period after the vessel went down.

In a separate development last week, the same group reported that roughly 150 migrants were missing in the central Mediterranean after at least three boats set out from Tunisia. It remains unclear whether the boat involved in the latest sinking was connected to those earlier reports.
